Winter Blizzard Hits NYC: Travel Disruptions Expected Across JFK, LGA & EWR

🗓️ February 22, 2026 | 👤 Blog User

A powerful winter snowstorm has swept across the New York tri-state area, triggering one of the region’s most serious weather alerts in years. The officials have issued a blizzard warning for New York City, Long Island, and parts of New Jersey. This thus marks the first warning of this level in nearly a decade. Forecasters have warned the storm could bring 10 to 20 inches of snow, accompanied by strong winds and dangerous whiteout conditions through Monday.

Meteorologists say snowfall rates may reach 1-2 inches per hour. This is combined with wind gusts up to 55 mph. This is creating travel conditions described as dangerous to impossible. State officials also declared emergencies across multiple counties as crews prepared for road closures, coastal flooding risks, and power outages.

Major Airport Delays Expected

The storm is already impacting regional transportation, with airlines warning of widespread disruptions. Aviation experts expect flight delays, cancellations, and possible ground stops at JFK, LaGuardia (LGA), and Newark (EWR) as heavy snow and low visibility move through peak travel hours. Weather analysts note that airport disruptions could continue even after snowfall ends due to runway clearing and aircraft repositioning.

Road conditions around airport corridors are also expected to worsen quickly, with icy highways and reduced visibility slowing traffic into terminals. Officials are urging travelers to arrive earlier than usual and avoid unnecessary driving during the height of the storm.

Emergency Airport Parking Advice

During snowstorms, airport garages often fill rapidly as travelers rush to reschedule flights or park vehicles safely off city streets. Last-minute arrivals often face higher walk-up parking prices and limited availability.

Travelers flying during the storm are encouraged to secure parking in advance near the airport to avoid delays and exposure to severe weather.

Pre-booking enables drivers to proceed directly to a reserved space, eliminating the need to search through crowded garages during hazardous conditions.

Stay Safe While Traveling

Authorities recommend monitoring airline updates, allowing additional travel time, and limiting outdoor exposure during peak snowfall. With heavy accumulation and strong winds expected, planning is affected, especially for the airport transportation and parking, which can significantly reduce travel stress.

As the storm continues, travelers should prepare for changing conditions and prioritize safety above schedules.
