TSA Staff Shortage Triggers Hours-Long Security Lines at Major U.S. Airports

Air travelers across the United States are facing longer queues at airport security checkpoints as a growing number of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers are calling out of work due to a partial federal government funding lapse.

At several major airports, including hubs in Atlanta and Houston, TSA checkpoint wait times have stretched from two to four hours, with lines spilling into terminal entrances and parking areas. The spoken absences have been directly linked to a funding gap at the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees the TSA.

Although major delays have been documented elsewhere, officials at Newark Liberty International Airport say the facility has not yet seen widespread callouts. However, they caution the situation could change if staffing issues worsen. Approximately 1,000 TSA agents at Newark are bracing for their first missed full paycheck this week unless federal funding resumes.

Travel industry professionals are urging passengers to monitor TSA wait times in the same way they check flight status, recommending tools such as the MYTSA app or airport websites for real-time updates. As spring travel demand builds, early arrival at airports is strongly advised to help avoid missed departures.

Nationwide, unscheduled absences among TSA officials have surged, resulting in a triple-digit increase in callouts compared with normal levels. When units operate with fewer staff, airport managers may consolidate security lanes, resulting in slower processing and increased workload for the remaining agents.

Congress continues negotiations over Homeland Security funding, but until an agreement is reached, travelers should plan for potential delays and remain patient with screening staff working under difficult conditions.
