Thousands of air travelers across the United States are facing significant travel disruptions after hundreds of flights were canceled and thousands delayed at major airports. Airlines including Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, United Airlines, PSA Airlines, SkyWest, and several others have been impacted, leaving passengers stranded.

More than 600 flights have been canceled, while over 4,000 flights have been delayed across the country. The disruptions are impacting major airports in cities such as Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Miami, and Los Angeles, creating widespread international and domestic travel chaos.

Severe Weather Triggers Widespread Travel Chaos

A powerful storm system moving across the central United States is the main cause of the disruption. The weather system has brought strong winds, thunderstorms, hail, and possible tornado activity, forcing airlines to cancel flights for safety reasons.

Major Airports Experiencing Worst Delays

Several of the busiest airports in the United States are experiencing the highest number of cancellations and delays.

  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) recorded over 130 flight cancellations and more than 360 delays, severely affecting travelers connecting through the airport.
  • Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) saw approximately 130 cancellations and over 240 delays, leaving many passengers waiting for the alternative flights.
  • Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) reported over 70 cancellations and more than 330 delays, causing disruptions for connecting passengers across multiple routes.
  • Other major airports such as Miami International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport have also been dealing with heavy delays as airlines attempt to manage the surge of disrupted flights.

Airlines Hit by the Highest Number of Delays

Several major US carriers are experiencing operational challenges due to the severe weather.
The highest disruptions have occurred in:

Delta Airlines

  • American Airlines
  • United Airlines
  • PSA Airlines
  • SkyWest

Spirit Airlines

  • JetBlue Airways
  • Alaska Airlines

Weather experts warn that the severe storm system may continue to move across several states in the coming days.
Airports and airlines are expected to continue issuing ground delays, schedule adjustments, and weather advisories until conditions improve.

Advice for Travelers Affected by the Disruptions

  • Check flight status frequently
  • Contact airlines for rebooking
  • Consider alternate routes
  • Prepare for longer waits

Will travel return to normal?

Although meteorologists expect the worst of the storm to weaken in the coming days, the aviation system may take time to fully recover. Airlines will need several days to reposition aircraft, reschedule crews, and clear the backlog of delayed flights.
